The Legends Capsule draws inspiration from the official US Open 2025 theme, honoring Althea Gibson—the first Black competitor at the tournament. Just as the theme art celebrates her legacy with bold expression, this collection expands the conversation by bringing fashion and creativity into the world of tennis.
The US Open is no longer just about competition—it’s also a stage for style, self-expression, and culture, rooted in the energy of Queens, New York. The Legends Capsule channels that spirit with limited-edition shirts, prints, and stickers created in drawn and designed by Kaylyn J. Hill (KJH, Founder of ADBC). It’s about honoring history while reimagining where the game and its culture can go next.
ALTHEA GIBSON
The Legends Capsule carries the message “In honor of Althea” as a tribute to Althea Gibson, the first Black athlete to compete at the US Open in 1950. Gibson broke barriers on and off the court, paving the way for future generations of players to step into spaces where they were once excluded. Her courage and triumph redefined what was possible, and this collection honors her legacy through design, storytelling, and cultural celebration.
A Legacy Carried Forward
From Althea Gibson’s groundbreaking debut to the dominance of Serena Williams and the rising brilliance of Coco Gauff, Black women have shaped the history and the future of tennis. Serena’s unmatched power and grace made her a global icon, while Coco represents the new generation pushing the game forward with fresh energy and determination. Together, they embody the multigenerational presence of Black women in tennis—proof that the door Gibson opened continues to create space for legends to rise.
Serena Williams
Serena Williams is a true US Open icon. She won the Women’s Singles title six times (1999, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014) and captured two Women’s Doubles titles (1999, 2009) with her sister Venus. Serena’s dominance in New York not only redefined the game with her power and presence, but also inspired generations of athletes to see themselves as champions on tennis’s biggest stage.
COCO GAUFF
Coco Gauff made history at the 2023 US Open, winning the Women’s Singles title at just 19 years old, becoming the youngest American champion since Serena Williams in 1999. Her breakthrough victory marked a defining moment in tennis, cementing her as the future of the sport and continuing the legacy of Black women shaping the game.
